Weyerhaeuser Introduces the Next Direction in Carolina Living

Perhaps you have noticed the signs along N.C. Highway 43 or some rather large equipment moving brush and dirt. This activity is due to the progress being made for West New Bern, the multi-phase community situated at the sought-after corridor of U.S. Highway 70 (future I-42) and N.C. Highway 43. West New Bern will be the most comprehensive, mixed-use community in the Greater New Bern Area and Craven County, and it is designed to complement the charm and character of New Bern. The community is being developed by Weyerhaeuser, known locally as the developer of five other master-planned communities, one of the area’s larger employers and the owner of 43,800 timberland acres within the county and over 500,000 acres within the state.

West New Bern comprises three phases and approximately 3,000 acres. In Phase I’s 540 acres, plans call for up to 1,500 homes, including single-family, multi-family and townhome residences. To serve these residences, surrounding businesses and commuters, the proposed Main Street and outparcel opportunities will offer up to 75 acres of commerce. Beginning with the first phase of development, the area’s economy will be positively impacted with additional retail, restaurant, office and hotel sites to serve New Bern, Craven County and the highly desirable traffic traveling from the Raleigh region to the beaches. Weyerhaeuser Economic Development Manager Rose Fagler says, “We look forward to help further strengthen the economic climate of Craven County by launching West New Bern’s Phase I with a focus on homes and retail supporting the strong employment base within the area.”

The planned 35-acre lake, complete with on-water activities and relaxation areas, will naturally serve as the community hub. Other planned amenities include walking paths, nature trails, parks, community meeting house, fitness center and swimming pool. For Phase I commercial opportunities, NAI Carolantic Realty serves as the Broker of Record. Four parcels are currently available and suitable for several uses, including retail, adult living, educational institution, church and apartment living. Phase II and III are in the planning stages and will feature residential, retail, entertainment, office and commercial areas to support Craven County economic growth, retention and attraction. For all phases, the West New Bern Preferred Builder Program is being finalized to offer an exceptional collection of a variety of builders and home types, styles and price ranges.
